Great Russian Reads
Page history last edited by Bonny Einstein 2 mos ago
I just started this page on 8/23/09. I am hoping to add more resources throughout the school year. I think it would be great if students could write reviews, too. So that's something I will work on.

This is a great site that offers Russian goods at a reasonable price. I also like the site because it has so many pictures--I feel that it gives you a positive image of Russian folk traditions. And it does offer books for sale on Russia Folk Tales!

The Royal Diaries:
Anastasia, The Last Grand Duchess (Russia, 1914)
by Carolyn Meyer,
Scholastic Inc, New York: 2000.
This is an engaging book. It will show you the events that led up to the 1917 Russian Revolution through Anastasia's eyes. Several 6th grade girls at Forts Ferry' (Class of 2009) really enjoyed reading this book and discussing the details that they learned while reading it with me. It does use a few Russian words and phrases--which will make it all the more interesting to read! If you click on the book's image, it will take you to Amazon.com to give you pricing information. You should also check our libraries!

The Tale of the Firebird
by Gennady Spirin, Philomel Books, New York: 2002.
I love this book! Spirin is an accomplished artist. He was born outside of Moscow and is a graduate of the famed Stroganov Academy of Fine Arts. He is an award-winning illustrator, having won four Gold Medals from the Society of Illustrators. But...I knew this man had incredible talent even before I read the bookflap! He brings a real magic to his illustrations and yet they look very realistic! I particularly like the fact that his Firebird is a peacock! It's magical, yet possible! If you appreciate fine illustrations and enjoy fairy tales from other cultures, take this book out from the library. You can also click on the picture, it will take you to Amazon.com for pricing information.
